According to this Thursday’s press release, the Attorney-General of New York, Letitia James, stated that her office had received a court order against iFinex Inc., the operator of the encrypted currency exchange Bitfinex, and Tether, the issuer of USDT pegged to stabilize the dollar, requesting them to stop violating the laws of the state and deceiving the local population. The results of the investigation showed that Bitfinex had lost $850 million in mixed funds from customers and companies, and then made cover for the loss with Tether’s funds.

Specifically, James states that the Prosecutor's investigation found that iFinex Inc. operated Bitfinex and Tether simultaneously. Bitfinex transferred $850 million of funds from users and businesses to the payee, Crystal Capital, to cover losses that Bitfinex itself did not disclose to investors. Bitfinex and Tether's executives engaged in a business transaction with a conflict of interest, from which Bitfnex obtained up to $900 million in cash reserves to support USDT, and Bitfinex had spent at least $700 million of Teth's reserves, while Teth's financial movements were not disclosed to users.
这再度加剧了人们对于与美元挂钩的USDT是否得到了实际美元支持的担忧。按照Tether自己的说法，USDT与美元是1：1锚定的，也就是每发行1个USDT就会在银行存入1美元或者以上的保证金。
This again raises concerns as to whether USDT, pegged to the dollar, is supported by the actual dollar. According to Tether himself, USDT is anchored in the dollar by 1:1, which means that every USDT issued will deposit a guarantee of $1 or more in the bank.
但是到目前为止，还没有一项外部审计证明这笔资金确实存在，USDT的美元储备账户里现在有多少美元依然不得而知。USDT也频频陷入信任危机。
To date, however, there has been no external audit to confirm the existence of the funds, and it is still unknown how many dollars are in the US dollar reserve account. USDT is also in frequent crisis of trust.

NewBTC also reported that 300 bitcoins were stolen from Bitfinex for the first time. After Bitfinex’s hacking in the summer of 2016, about 300 bitcoins (with a value of approximately US$ 1.65 million) could not be restored and were transferred to 13 new addresses.
